Our broad selection of experienced educators and GP Practices in urban, outer metropolitan and rural communities offers registrars the opportunity to develop a broad skill set in their chosen GP Practice with a supportive, interactive and well-structured program format, through our Innovative Education Delivery, Advanced Skills Development and Structured Practice Participation.
Innovative Education Delivery is the essence of our medical curriculum, combined with the expertise and support of our educators and GP professionals, the latest in technology-assisted learning, and a strong, tried-and-tested program.
- gp-start. As the foundation of your education, gp-start is based on study modules that provide a solid structure for your transition from hospital training into general practice. gp-start has been developed in association with our Leading Doctors, and is delivered at GP Practice training sites with a focus on the diagnosis and management of common clinical problems in patients.
- gp-advanced. GP Advanced comprises Case Discussion Groups facilitated by Leading Doctors, where registrars review patient scenarios in-depth. gp-advanced forms the basis of comprehensive preparation for the RACGP exam taken in Year 3.
- Central Workshop Program. Our large-group workshops enable registrars to further explore complex medical issues and their treatments encountered in general practice, such as Women’s or Aboriginal Health.
- Mini-Workshop Program. Our smaller-group workshops are regionally based, and follow on from the Central Workshops Program to help you gain experience with even more medical issues and solutions in greater detail.
- Emergency Training. Fully accredited Emergency Medicine Training using high fidelity computer simulation has been pioneered by Sturt Fleurieu and now forms an important aspect of registrar training.
Sturt Fleurieu offers additional training opportunities to the registrar who would like to strengthen their practical medical skills. Our hands-on approach provides a framework to help you effectively manage unique situations such as trauma, and also provides registrars with an introduction to GP specialty practices such as anaesthetics or obstetrics.
- pro-start. Sturt Fleurieu actively encourages the development of procedural skills. During rural general practice terms registrars have the option of participating in pro-start, a ‘hands on’ learning guide which facilitates early exposure to rural procedural practice.
- Elective Courses. If desired, registrars may undertake a range of extra courses to complement general practice training in their area of interest or specialty.
- Special Skills Posts. Registrars may elect to take six months placement and training in special skills posts in rural or regional South Australia. Posts may be hospital or general practice-based.
- Clinical Attachments. Sturt Fleurieu offers a range of clinical attachments delivered concurrently with GP terms. There are available in dermatology (Flinders Medical Centre) and sexual assault medicine (Yarrow Place). They consist of one clinical session each week for 12 successive weeks and can be undertaken at advanced and subsequent levels.
Sturt Fleurieu works with GP Practices and their staff in several ways to promote continuity and the ongoing success of registrar training. We provide support resources to help practices train doctors.
Our participating GP Practices are ACRRM and RACGP accredited, with a reputation for the delivery of professional role modelling, effective registrar learning experiences, one-to-one teaching, supervision, feedback and advice. General support for registrars and their families is also available through Sturt Fleurieu and our participating GP Practices.
- Registrar Placement. Sturt Fleurieu works hand-in-hand with our selected GP Practices to ensure successful placement of registrars in an effective teaching environment, with continuity of training year after year.
- Leading Doctor Training. In order to prepare Leading Doctors for their role in training registrars, Sturt Fleurieu provides a support program that includes consultation, workshops and academic development with Leading Doctors and their GP Practices. This ensures practices understand your education requirements and needs.
- Monitoring and Support. To strengthen the learning experience, Sturt Fleurieu offers resources to GP Practices and registrars to help them get the most out of training. Initiatives include a registrar wellbeing program, interaction with a registrar liaison, and a remediation program for specific registrar needs during training.
- Registrar Performance Appraisal and Assessment. We provide support for the assessment of registrars, which is undertaken by Leading Doctors, Sturt Fleurieu staff and external visitors. Sturt Fleurieu also reviews its own teaching practices on a regular basis to ensure we are at the forefront of GP training.
